Road safety on the debating table

Altogether, 45 debaters from various schools came together at Capricorn High School to participate in the Road Safety Debate competition on 26 May.

POLOKWANE – In all, 10 schools within the Capricorn district took part in the competition which was aimed at involving schools and learners to be ambassadors of road safety and help government and the Department of Transport in particular to reduce road accidents and deaths.

The five motions were ‘South Africa is ready for the safe systems approach to road safety’, ‘Investment in road safety infrastructure will reduce road crashes’, ‘Being affiliated to the United Nation Road Safety collaboration has benefitted road safety in South Africa’, ‘Traffic law enforcement in South Africa is adequate to ensure adherence to the rules of the road’ and ‘The national road safety strategy is the solution to South Africa’s road safety problems’.

Mabothe Mothapo (Department of Transport), David Baloyi (Road Safety Officer for the Department of Transport), Lerato Hlongwane (teacher at St Brendan’s Catholic School), Karabo Ramalatso (St Brendan’s Catholic School), Jason Rasesemola (Mamolemane Secondary School), Gerald Tlabela (Mamolemane Secondary School), Zacharia Mabala (Mamolemane Secondary School).

When all was said and done, Ramabulane Madzanga and Alicia Mmethie from PEPPS College and Eagle’s Nest Christian School respectively shared the first position. Because of the joint first, second place was not allocated.

Hlaka Poroma from Taxila Secondary School and Munaka Munyai from PEPPS College were jointly awarded third place. Because of the joint third position, position four was not allocated. Fifth position was awarded to Tsebo Sekole from Capricorn High School.

The top five debaters will represent the Capricorn district at the provincial debating competition in August.
