Traffic officer arrested for shooting at teenage girls near Westenburg

Police have arrested the off duty officer (42) and he will face a charge of attempted murder.

POLOKWANE – According to police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Greenside, between Extension 40 and 44.

Three minor girls, aged 13, 15 and 17 were walking along the street when the suspect insulted them. An exchange of words ensued between the man and the youngsters before he chased them with his motor vehicle.

“The suspect apparently fired several shots in the direction of the children injuring the 17-year-old girl in the process. Police and emergency services were summoned and immediately responded, leading to the apprehension of the suspect and the confiscation of his private firearm,” Ngoepe explained.

The victim was rushed to hospital where she was treated and is recuperating at home.

Further police investigations are still being conducted to establish the circumstances of the shooting.

“Legal gun owners are reminded to always comply with the provisions of the Firearm Controls Act. Any contravention of this Act may result in the owner being declared unfit to possess a firearm in addition to the criminal charges that will be pressed against him/her,” he concluded.

The suspect will appear in the Polokwane Magistrate Court soon on a charge of attempted murder.
