A fireman from Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) is recovering in Mediclinic Limpopo after he was hit by a passing vehicle at an accident scene on the N1 at Botlokwa early on Saturday morning.
CDM Spokesperson Jabu Masondo confirmed yesterday (Wednesday) that Steven Motaung from Lepelle-Nkumpi Fire Station sustained fractures of his wrist and leg and was scheduled for surgery the same day. Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed on Tuesday that a case of reckless or negligent driving had been opened after a pedestrian was knocked over by a speeding car but no arrest was made while the investigation into the incident continues.
This follows after a number of recent incidents in which law enforcement officers and emergency services personnel were targeted. During the Easter weekend, Masedi Mabusela (48), a traffic officer attached to Tubatse-Fetakgomo Municipality was killed in a hit-and-run while doing point duty at Apel and a Police constable was shot in the head after two suspects opened fire on him in a separate incident at Masha Village in Sekhukhune. Three weeks ago a traffic inspector of Polokwane Municipality was allegedly knocked over by a motorist while the official was issuing a ticket for illegal parking. Ngoepe confirmed on Wednesday that Silas Senwamadi (45) of Mphakane in Botlokwa appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and that the case was postponed to 7 August pending further investigation. Senwamadi was released on R500 bail. According to a source, the fireman attended to an earlier accident when a passing motorist allegedly skipped the line of waiting vehicles and knocked over the official.
