Zaaiplaas protests: all seven suspects to remain in custody

The susepcts were arrested following two separate incidents where a police van and a school building was torched

LIMPOPO – The case against the seven suspects arrested suspects in this matter has been postponed to allow for further investigation.

They appeared before the Groblersdal Magistrate Court today on two counts of arson, malicious damage to property and assault on Police and are set to reappear on 7 June 2018.


LIMPOPO – According to a statement issued by PoliceZaaiplaas spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, this comes after the Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba visited the affected area on Saturday. In a meeting attended by various stake holders, an agreement was reached that will see the end to these violent protests that engulfed the area for the past four days.

As part of his intervention, a sting joint operation led by the Saps Groblersdal Cluster Commander Brigadier Mafete Mogwaneng, was also conducted in the Zaaiplaas policing area last night where the suspects, aged 24 and 29 respectively, were arrested at Keerom village.

The operation was composed of the Saps members from the Denilton, Motetema, Groblesdal, Hlogotlou and Nebo.

This brings to seven the total number of suspects arrested since the violence started. More arrests are expected.

The seven suspects will appear in Groblersdal Magistrate court on Monday on charges of two counts of arson, malicious damage to property and assault on Police.

The Police investigations and monitoring of the situation in the area, are still continuing.


LIMPOPO – Five suspects were arrested for public violence following the burning of a Police van and injuring one Police Officer last night and the recent torching of Rehlahlilwe Primary School Administration block in Keerom in the Zaaiplaas area outside Groblesdal on Friday.

It is alleged that in the early hours of Friday, a group of local residents went on a rampage and torched the school building. The Police were notified and responded immediately and through the suspects aged between 28 and 50 were arrested for public violence, said Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

Cases of Malicious Damage to Property, Assault and arson were opened and investigations are continuing. The suspects with regards to torching of police van and injuring of constable  are still unknown and there are no arrests.
