Khutjo tells stories through her fine art

Khutjo Mmethi is a qualified artist with diverse experiences in arts.

POLOKWANE – Hailing from Seshego, she said it is her outspoken personality that inspires her to keep working on her craft as an artist.

“I am a creative and passionate fine arts graduate who has taken part in various exhibitions and projects which highlight my position as a young black female artist. Art never appealed to me as a career because I saw it as a hobby while growing up, creating photo frames from cardboard and painting table cloths for fun. Charcoals, metals, clocks, wood and found objects might seem like insignificant things to most people, but to me, it is what I breathe and live. Style, technique and uniqueness are valuable components to an artist,” she explained.

She told BONUS her love and passion for art started evolving while she was in high school when she fell in love with technical drawing. This project prompted her to further pursue a qualification in architecture.

“I believe being an artist is my calling as when I applied to study towards an architecture degree I was directed to the visual arts department which led me to study fine arts at the Vaal University of Technology. One of my artworks was selected in the top 100 for the Absa L’Atelier 2013 young artist’s competition in South Africa,” she said.

Khutjo describes herself as an enthusiastic, open-minded individual who is always eager to learn new things in the art industry.

She added she gives herself time to develop and nurture new techniques and skills she learns. She said she creates pieces that can relate to the collector’s sense of style and articulate their personalities as she gets inspired by the modern way of life as well as what she sees and feels.

“It is always a pleasure for me to incorporate found objects into my creations. Artworks should not only be valuables to decorate our homes, they should have an expression of self, whether playful, simple or extraordinary.”
