Community of Mokopane outraged by water restrictions

Residents expressed their dissatisfaction on social media after the Mogalakwena Municipality instated water restrictions with immediate effect last Thursday.

MOKOPANE – According to the media statement from the municipality, the water restrictions is due to insufficient rainfall, rise of temperatures and fast declining dam levels.

Consumers were informed that water restrictions in Mokopane and Mahwelereng will be every day between 04:00 to 12:00 and 16:00 to 22:00.

Andrina Matsemela, Mogalakwena Mayor, urged residents to work together to change the way they use water.

Yolande Coetzee, DA Councillor, said: “I think we should not panic too soon and first see how the restriction affects us.

“The restriction was implemented last week and we did not experience any problems. The community will still have water during these time slots but with low water pressure.

“We urge residents to use water sparingly during this time. If the municipality is not able to lift the reservoir levels during this time, they will be forced to implement total water restriction whereby there will be no water at times”.

According to Coetzee, the municipality’s water tankers can take water to people in rural areas where people do not have access to water.

Marcelle Maritz, Councillor and Limpopo Leader of the Freedom Front Plus, said the community must work together to alleviate the need for water.

“Every household and business must use water sparingly.

“Water is a necessity for life and people need to begin to realise there is not an abundance of water. South Africa is a dry land and climate change plays a major role in the rainfall.

“Every year we see the rainy season is later and the rainfall is less.

“If there is no water there is no life.”
