Rhino poaching syndicate cracked during road block in Hoedspruit

An ear, nose and tail believed to be of a white rhino were found in the vehicle of three suspects who were arrested.

LIMPOPO – In a concerted effort to fight the scourge of crime by Limpopo police, crime fighting strategies including roadblocks and stop and searches are still yielding positive and meaningful results, says police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

Three suspects were arrested at a road block along the R40 route in the Hoedspruit area on Friday night, 18 May.

The arrest was made during a joint operation ‘Uya Pamwe’ as part of Operation Fiela II.

The joint operation composed of the South African Police Service, the Hoedspruit farm watch, Young Civillians on Patrol (YCOP) and the Community Policing Forum (CPF) who were manning a stop and search road block when they stopped a speeding motor vehicle.

“Upon searching the vehicle, over R200 000 in cash, an ear, a nose and a tail believed to be of a white rhino were found in the vehicle. One of the suspects was found to be out on R5 000 bail recently on a rhino poaching related case,” he said.

The three suspects, aged, 25, 39 and 49-years-old, will appear before the Hoedspruit Magistrate Court on Monday, 21 May.
