Quick action by Polokwane Municipality saved thousands of litres of water from going to waste following a collision between two sedans on the corner of Thabo Mbeki and Webster streets earlier this afternoon (Thursday).
While the collision was not serious and no one was injured, one of the vehicles collided with a fire hydrant on the corner. Within minutes of the accident occurring Chris Pistorius, foreman of the municipality’s Water Section and Johan Muller, municipal plumber, were on the scene with special equipment to turn off the flow of precious water.
According to Pistorius, their work is often impeded by all sorts of waste being stuffed into the hole where the valves for turning off the water flow are located. “The covers are stolen and then waste such as stones, papers and glass find their way into the holes,” he explained.
