Vleislapa Marshall and Grobler scoops Cleaver Awards

Previous winners of the butchery fraternity’s prestigious Cleaver Awards for more than five years, Vleislapa Marshall Street and Vleislapa Grobler Street did not disappoint their clients when they were first in the row to receive a Platinum and a Gold award respectively in the category for butcheries with four or more tills at an awards ceremony that took place in Johannesburg recently.
The Cleaver Awards is an initiative of the South African Red Meat Industry Forum and aims to acknowledge butcheries which meet consumer expectations on in-store hygiene, the supply of quality assured roller marked South African beef and their level of competency in offering the best advice on meal preparations and perceived value for money.
Butchery owners took up the challenge to guarantee their customers a better product measured against a 212 point check list used to assess nominated butcheries. The butcheries were nominated by clients.
Nominations were open between October and December last year for consumers around the country to nominate their best butchery. Over 30 000 public nominations were received via SMS or online and of these, 105 finalists were individually and anonymously assessed.
Butcheries were judged according to three categories namely butcheries with four or more till points, butcheries with three or fewer till points and food market/supermarket butcheries.
Owner of Vleislapa Marshall Street, Marius van Tonder says that he is very proud of the business’ achievement and commended his staff for their ongoing efforts to keep the butchery at the top. His brother, Kobus van Tonder of Vleislapa Grobler Street echoed his sentiments.
