34 046 vehicles stopped and checked in Limpopo over the long weekend

This is according to the Limpopo Department of Transport's 'Long Weekend Operational stats'.

POLOKWANE – High traffic volumes were expected on Limpopo’s roads as the long weekend drew nearer, however, the weekend was marred by accidents and drunk driving.

The long weekend got off on the wrong foot when taxis blocked the Carousel Toll Plaza in the early ours of Friday morning, 27 April.

It is still unknown what the reason for the blockade was.

In addition, 6 people were killed on the D19 road near Mamadila village in the Capricorn district on Friday evening, 27 April, during a head on collision.

On Saturday, 28 April, a Limpopo Traffic Officer was killed by a drunk driver near Lebowakgomo after he was knocked and left on the side of the road with his injuries.

According to the spokesperson for the Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala, the following operations took place over the weekend.

  • 34 046 vehicles were stopped and checked
  • 2 302 speed notices were issued.
  • Three drivers were arrested for speeding
  • 25 people were arrested for drunk driving
  • 36 vehicles were discontinued
  • 10 vehicles were impounded

He concluded by reiterating once again that Limpopo is considered a zero tolerance zone when it comes to disobeying the rules of the road.
