[WATCH] Heavy delays as taxis block the Carousel Toll Plaza

The Department of Transport says Limpopo traffic had to intervene but the situation has been resolved.

LIMPOPO – According to spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala, taxis caused major congestion at the Carousel plaza in the early hours of this morning, 27 April, blocking the entire plaza for motorists travelling north.

“Even though the situation was occurring on the Gauteng side of the plaza, Limpopo Traffic officials had to intervene due to law enforcement being outnumbered. Through SANRAL, Bakwena Platinum and the Limpopo Department of Transport, additional Gauteng officials were deployed and a request was made to open the gates to restore flow of traffic,” he explained.

The reason for the blockage is unknown at this stage.

Moremi-Taueatsoala says as a result, the delay caused congestion further North at the Kranskop toll plaza and advised motorists to exercise patience.

According to Bakwena Platinum, as at 10:00 this morning, traffic flow northbound at the Carousel Toll Plaza stood at 2 548 vehicles per hour.
