Following yesterday’s (Tuesday) violent protest along the R81 at Mooketsi between Polokwane and Giyani, disgruntled community members continued with their rampage earlier this morning (Wednesday).
According to Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe the Public Order Policing Unit (Pops) managed to clear the road and it was opened for motorists. The situation was also brought to a calm until this morning when community members who are allegedly upset about the delayed construction of a certain tar road in the area started barricading the road again.
Ngoepe said more Police members were deployed to the area to disperse protesting community members and the road has once again been cleared and safe for motorists to use.
Pops will remain in the area to monitor the situation.
Only one truck was burnt and there is no other reported incidents of damage to property, injuries or fatalities at this stage, according to Ngoepe.
Several cases of malicious damage to property and public violence have been opened at Modjadjiskloof Police Station.
No arrests were made yet but a special task team has been established to investigate the matter.
