Mecklenburg: Couple die in burning house in apparent domestic dispute

The couple's children noticed the house was on fire and alerted the community who in turn alerted the police.

LIMPOPO – Police in Mecklenburg outside Burgersfort are still investigating the death of a couple on Monday, 9 April in the Ga-Selepe village.

According to police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the deceased’s children noticed flames coming through the windows and roof of the house and screamed for help. The local community immediately responded and further notified police.

“On arrival, a 61-year-old man was found burnt beyond recognition and a 47-year-old woman was rushed to hospital where she later succumbed to the burn wounds,” Ngoepe explained.

He added that the cause of fire and the motive behind this incident is unknown but domestic violence cannot be ruled out.

“Police investigations continue,” he concluded.
