POLOKWANE – One of the main focuses of the Mrs Polokwane Organisation is to empower women and lift them up in their communities. Shirley-Ann Sheriff-More, a Mrs Polokwane 2019 finalist was motivated by that premise to enter the competition because it is something she strives to do.

Shirley-Ann, a mother of two and a wife to soccer coach, Morris, says she wants to empower women, especially in the coloured community. “I want them to change the way they think,” she tells Review.

“I own a preschool and teach children. I spend my days with them, barefoot and happy, but I want to go into the community and help other women to achieve their goals.”

She explains that her chosen charity organisation for the Mrs Polokwane competition is a non-profit organisation based in Westenburg.

“Charity begins at home and City Angels provide hot meals twice a week to those in need. They also provide clothing. I am also planning on giving a revamp to the sickbay at Westenburg High School,” she adds.

She laughs when she explains that her husband, Morris, was a bit shocked when she announced her decision to take part in the competition. “Since I spend most of my free time with my two children, supporting my husband and running my own business, he was afraid that I will not be able to have time for everything. But after discussing it, he supports me and is just as excited as I am.”

Shirley-Ann is planning a soccer tournament at the Westenburg Stadium on 14 July. “Since Morris takes children from the street and teaches them how to play soccer, I decided to make this my main event.”

She says when she received the phone call to inform her that she was a finalist, she screamed with excitement and then phoned her husband.

“At the moment, I’m overwhelmed, excited and proud of myself. I want to do a lot of networking during my time as a finalist. You will not know who you are going to meet and who might need your help or who might be able to help you. I’m looking forward to meeting new people and making new friends and acquaintances. I want to broaden my horizons and this competition is affording me that opportunity.”
