Kgaogelo Moime, one of five suspects allegedly responsible for the bombing of a bus carrying 50 mineworkers, of which six were burnt beyond recognition, at Driekop outside Burgersfort Monday evening, appeared in the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court earlier today (Thursday). The remaining four suspects are expected to appear in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (Friday).
Provincial Police Corporate Communications Head Motlafela Mojapelo indicated that Moime remains in custody until his second appearance next Thursday.
The five suspects face six charges of murder as well as charges of attempted murder and malicious damage to property. The charges are the result of a bus from Segweka Bus Services, collecting Modikwa Platinum Mine night shift workers in the area, allegedly having been set alight at Driekop on Monday between 20:00 and 21:00. When the bus stopped two suspects allegedly got onto the bus and reportedly dropped what seemed to have been a petrol bomb, before fleeing the scene, according to Mojapelo.
He added that the bus was quickly engulfed in flames and the occupants tried to escape through the windows. Twenty-eight suffered burn wounds and were taken to a nearby hospital while four men and two women burnt beyond recognition inside the bus.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba has assembled a high level team of investigators comprising of members of the Organised Crime Unit, Limpopo Hawks and the Crime Intelligence Unit who managed to track down and arrest the five suspects yesterday (Wednesday).
