POLOKWANE – During the handover of 36 ambulances and medical vehicles by MEC Phophi Ramathuba, she emphasized the importance of emergency medical service (EMS) personnel.

“When we say that we will empower our people, we will empower them by giving them their certificates that they need.”

She confirmed that there is a crisis with EMS as there are not enough trained EMS personnel in the province.

“Limpopo must be the best, it used to be the best, it will be the best again.”

She went on to explain the importance of EMS members, adding that for a surgeon to be operating on a patient, the patient would have been resuscitated on the scene by EMS.

“EMS is the first to arrive on a scene, they are supposed to be the most skilled as they will be the one to assist the patient to get to the hospital. You can have as many orthopedic surgeons and trauma surgeons, but when you don’t have EMS, even myself as an MEC with medical aid, will die. My investment will be EMS.”
