With the long weekend only days away, the province will once again host the annual Moria Zion City pilgrimage and Makhurupetje says the province is expecting to receive millions of people going to different churches and family gatherings.

The Easter holiday – from Friday, 30 March to Monday, 2 April – is traditionally a period when there is a rapid spike in traffic on most major national and provincial highways.

Spokesperson for the Department, Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala says traffic flow is expected to be higher than usual on major routes to and from Limpopo.

“These routes include the R71 to Moria, the N1 From Gauteng to Beitbridge as well as the N11 and Gilead Road from Groblersbridge,” he said.

The N1 from Gauteng to Beitbridge is expected to have high volumes of traffic
The R71 to Moria is also expected to be busy over the Easter weekend.

In terms of readiness, Moremi-Taueatsoala says over 1000 traffic officials will be on the roads this weekend to ensure visibility and will be backed up by National Traffic Officials from RTMC, South African Police Service members as well as municipal officers.

“They have all agreed to assist us in ensuring road safety and we will also be joined by emergency personnel,” he added.

Moremi-Taueatsoala also noted that mobile health centres will be visible on the roads for motorists to test their blood pressure and sugar levels, given that these are some of the symptoms which can lead to fatal accidents.

“We are encouraging motorists to stop and rest on their journeys to make sure they arrive alive. Don’t rush,” he said.

The Department are also encouraging motorists to check the road-worthiness of their vehicles before setting off on their journeys as to avoid accidents.

“There will be a no tolerance approach to those that disobey the rules of the road this weekend and our officers will be very strict when it comes to this,” he concluded.
