[TAKE NOTE] R101 open between The Carousel and Pienaarsrivier

Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba visited the affected area this morning to assess the situation

LIMPOPO –  According to a statement issued by Police spokesperson Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, following the closure of the R101 road between the Carousel and Pienaarsrivier yesterday (24 March 2018), the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba has this morning visited the area to assess the situation for any possible safety risks to our communities.

After an in-loco inspection of the affected area, which included the bridge and the nearby houses, the following can now be confirmed:

• The R101 road is now opened for traffic and the situation is back to normal with no threat at all to residnets.

• The bridge at Pienaarsrivier that was yesterday flooded, is now safe; the water has subsided and motorists are able to pass over without any hindrance.

• As the water has subsided and is flowing under the bridge, no crocodiles could be noticed in the area adjacent to the bridge.

Genl Ledwaba said: “After visiting the affected area, I’m now satisfied that everything is back to normal and the R101 road is safe nd opening to motorists.”


LIMPOPO –  Motorists are warned that the provincial road, R101 between The Carousel and Pienaarsrivier has been closed for traffic due to flooding.

According to Police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, part of the bridge has collapsed due to heavy rains that have fallen in the area. “Nearby RDP houses and other residential areas in the vicinity have also been affected, he says.

Crocodiles have also been spotted in the area and residents are warned to be extra cautious, he adds.

Members of the Police Search and Rescue Unit, the K9 unit, Disaster Management, Traffic and other emergency services have been sent to the area to assess the situation.

Motorists are advised to make use of alternative road, the N1 which runs parallel to the R101, concludes Ngoepe.
