Going the extra mile for education

Having a passion to help others better their lives, economics and management sciences and accounting teacher, Martha Chuene-Masopoga from Hoërskool Westenburg Secondary aims to help learners perform at their best.

POLOKWANE – “I adopted Kabelo High School from Extension 44, just outside Polokwane, in 2016 with the aim to help learners from disadvantaged backgrounds with basic necessities such as stationery and school uniforms. I believe this has a strong impact on the learners’ performance as well as overall confidence and self-esteem. This is why I started a back to school campaign where I collect stationary and donate to some of the most disadvantaged learners in that school to encourage others in the community to do the same and help those who are in need,” Martha explained.

She is also the learners’ life coach where she advises them about life and encourages them to work hard as it is the only way that they can change their situations.

“Most of these children lack motivation and drive to carry on with life when they come across challenges, whether it be emotionally or physically. They have no one to relate to or talk to openly with regard to their problems which is something I picked in one of my sessions with the learners. I decided to have frequent one on one sessions with them so we can talk as well as try to find solutions to problems they may face.”

“When you are educated, the sky’s the limit. You can get anywhere as well as become anything you have ever dreamt of, these are some of the words I always leave the learners with.” She encourages the community to lend a helping hand and donate in any way they can to make school fun and comfortable for every child.
