‘African Spielberg’ at home behind a lens

Even before television, Chris Pelser knew he wanted to go into the production, filming and directing business.

POLOKWANE – He is a creative entrepreneur who has kept up with the latest technology when it comes to directing, producing and filming during his travels around the world.

Chris is known as the ‘African Spielberg’ and his diversity has brought him many opportunities in shooting a variety of documentaries and diverse topics for international and national clients, making him an industry professional.

“My dad was a cinematographer and photographer. He was my mentor and I got the opportunity to learn everything there is to know about the technical challenges within the industry. At first it was a hobby, which effortlessly became my career.”

Chris, who is the sole owner of Pro-Video Productions, explained he worked as a freelancer for a variety of television stations before he got involved with directing and shooting unique documentaries, incorporating his personal style.

“I have 11 years’ experience of producing programmes in the United States, which has a very competitive market.

“I work wherever I am needed. My Africa explorations include, among others, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania and Cameroon. Other locations include Australia, North and South America and England. I often shoot documentaries and promotional DVDs for game farms.”

The transferring process from old video formats to new formats like USB and DVD has become a popular request and he said he finds this process interesting.

Chris was recently requested to transfer reels which date back more than 50 years.

“Television production is a skill and when you get involved in the field, you have to be committed to deliver the best service.

“A producer needs an artistic eye as editing is the most challenging skill because it is here where the full picture comes to life.

“I enjoy giving my best in each project, because positive feedback from clients will ensure word-of-mouth marketing.”

He guarantees 100% confidentiality and non-disclosure between himself and his clients.

A typical day in Chris’ life starts with cuddling his three Persian cats, answering e-mail correspondence, browsing social media platforms and connecting with clients who need his professional services.

The editing of a shoot starts when he sets time aside to focus.

“I am my own worst critic,” he said, adding editing is only done when he is satisfied with the best possible final product.

“After more than 25 years’ experience, I still make sure the final product is top quality. The client is king.

“You are only as good as your last production.”
