3 cheetah cubs add to Mapungubwe magic

Three new additions to the Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site brought a smile to many faces.

LIMPOPO – The park recently welcomed three new cheetah cubs which isn’t just good news for the park but for the country as a whole as cheetahs are classified as one of the threatened mammals.

“The park is home to a sizeable cheetah population but their numbers decreased by uncontrolled illegal hunting for their skin, even though they are seldom seen because of the thick mopani bushveld in some areas of the park. Since late last year, however, the animals have been spotted several times by rangers and tourists to the park which makes it a great value-add to the tourist experience in the park,” said Park Manager, Conrad Strauss.

Strauss added this cheetah family can be spotted on the western side of the park. “Cubs depend on their mom for survival so the ‘mom and the trio’ as they are affectionately known, are expected to be seen together for quite some time,” Strauss added.

“The Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site is situated just 70 km west of Musina in Limpopo. Over and above the sightings, a visit to the majestic Mapungubwe hill where the first African kingdom existed as well as the world class interpretation centre is always a marvel,” Strauss concluded.
