Over R1 million damage caused during R37 protest action

The Limpopo Police have once more warned residents to stop acts of violence and vigilantism following the torching of bus during community protests in the Tubatse Policing area outside Burgersfort this morning.

LIMPOPO – The R37 road near Ribacross village was barricaded with rubble, rocks and burning tyresĀ  during the protest and public order police were called in to manage the situation, says Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

The damage caused during this incident is estimated to over a million rand, however, no reported injuries or fatalities were reported, adds Ngoepe.

The motive behind this protest action is not clear at this stage and cases of malicious damage to property and public violence are being investigated.

No arrests have been made as yet.

The Saps Provincial Commissioner Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba has re-itterated his earnest call that residents must embrace and respect the laws of this country in all aspects.

“When exercising your democratic rights during protests, do it responsibly by respecting the rights of others and the freedom of movement. You cannot engage in violent protests to raise your complaints or concerns and further damage other people’s properties. This is pure criminality and it will be dealt with mercilessly and without compromise,” concluded General Ledwaba.
