Use the correct documents when applying for credit

Korny Dekker, DA ward councillor, warns the public that the proof of residence papers provided by some ward councillors are not according to the Fica law.

MOKOPANE – Residents have to make sure they use the correct proof of residence papers when applying for credit at any financial institution.

Korny Dekker, DA ward councillor, warns the public that the proof of residence papers provided by some ward councillors are not according to the Fica law. “We have been approached by residents who require proof of residence papers on a daily basis. The DA consulted a legal representative who advised that there is no legislation that authorised a ward councillor to issue a proof of residence.”

According to Dekker the DA was advised by the Financial Intelligence Center in Pretoria, to seek legal advice and ensure these illegalities stop immediately, because it is against what the legislation states. “The DA was informed that the legislation has specific guidelines regarding the correct documentation that can be used as proof of residence. It is against the law for any financial institution to accept the proof of residence issued by ward coucillors.”

Dekker said if there is no other way for someone to obtain a proof of residence, this person should then complete an affidavit at the local police station.

Documents that can be presented as a confirmation of residential address must reflect the person’s name, surname and residential address include the following:

• Utility bill.

• Bank statement.

• A lease or rental agreement.

• Municipal rates and taxes invoice.

• Mortgage statement.

• Telephone or cellular account.

• Valid television licence.

• Long term or short term insurance policy.

• Motor vehicle license documentation.

• Retail store statement.
