Edgar takes over the media and corporate world

Edgar DS Rathelele's vast experience in a number of fields affords him the opportunity to excel in both of his current roles.

POLOKWANE – Perfecting his craft in both the corporate and media industry, Edgar DS Rathelele (35) who is a Media Relations Officer at the Department of Communication and the Vice President of Lolhiphop Records has more than eight years of experience in the broadcasting, corporate communication, marketing and media relations field.

Rathelele started his school career at Dulang Primary School in 1988 in Bolobedu and moved on to Mamokgadi Primary School in 1989.

After completing his primary school education, he started his high school career at Kheale High School and matriculated in both 1999 and 2000. “Yes, I repeated matric but not because I failed. My parents didn’t have money and the knowledge to give me the opportunity for a tertiary qualification, so, instead of staying at home for the whole year I opted to go back to school to improve my marks. Back then I had little knowledge about NSFAS or TEFSA bursaries,” he explained.

He later enrolled in a language practice course at the then Pretoria Technikon in 2001. “I initially wanted to study journalism, but the course was full. Apart from my academic challenges at the technikon I enjoyed my life at university,” he added.

He also worked as a producer and an entertainment contributor on Unisa FM breakfast. Due to his immense interest in the non-academic activities, his studies suffered and he later enrolled at Unisa in 2005 for a BA communication science degree. His radio journey started in 2005 at TUT Top Stereo which is now known as Tshwane FM.

He was part of the Comsa team tasked with founding Unisa Radio in 2008. He also assisted Mams FM with the training of new presenters and producers.

He also volunteered as a campus news reporter for Thobela FM. In 2012, Unisa Radio appointed him as the Marketing and Media Liaison Officer. He joined the Unisa College of Education (CEDU) as the Public Relations and Social Media Officer in 2014, entrusted with producing a college newsletter, social media maintenance, the organising and managing of events, updating the website and media relations. He holds a BA in communication science, an international computer driving license certificate and a basic media content analysis certificate.
