Come up smelling like roses, even if you smoke

The smell that comes with smoking, often lingering long after you've extinguished the cigarette, is something which isn't only a pain for non-smokers, but smokers as well.

POLOKWANE – Many smokers, however, have certain things they do to reduce the smell and to be considerate of people who do not smoke, sort of like an unwritten rule book.

One smoker told Review that even if he smokes in his car he will first ask a person driving with him if he would not mind him smoking.

“I think it is just something I do because I have respect for the other person,” the man explained.

Another woman told Review: “I never light a cigarette where people are eating as I believe it is rude. No one even stated that it is, but it is something many smokers do”.

A local smoker took some time to give Review a few pointers on things they do after or during smoking to reduce the tobacco smell

• For the hair, wear a hat you can deodorise, or pull your hair back. If neither of these are possible, just try to keep your hair out of the smoke. After smoking, use spray deodorant, citrus spray or any other deodoriser to mask the smell

• For clothes, the best thing to do is to have a change of clothes, but you can’t always do that. Remove any jackets or scarves or anything you can, so they don’t absorb the smoke. After smoking you can use dryer sheets or an odor eliminator spray to remove the smell.

• For the body, by using lotion or deodorant, you can get rid of bad smells from smoke on your body and hands.

• For your breath, you want to use mints or gum.

In general, most smokers have different methods of getting rid of their cigarette butts. In most cases making sure there is a dedicated smoking area with a dedicated place for the butts will help prevent picking up butts later.

Here are some tips to help deal with the smell if smoke in a building:

• Avoid smoking indoors at all costs. When it is rainy or windy, it can be difficult to bring yourself to step outside but if you can’t take the plunge, smoke near a window, as this will help the smoke to drift out of the room.

• Ventilate your room after smoking. Create a draft running through the room to allow fresh air in after you smoke.

• Clean out ashtrays regularly. Removing ash and cigarette butts from your ashtrays on a regular basis prevents them from acting as a particularly nasty kind of smoke-smell potpourri.
