A Police officer was killed and another critically injured after an accident in an armoured vehicle outside Lebowakgomo earlier today (Friday).
Provincial Police Corporate Communications Head Motlafela Mojapelo said the two officers attached to the Public Order Policing Unit (Pops) were travelling in a Nyala along the R37 to attend to protest action at Atok when the accident occurred.
It is alleged that a tyre on the vehicle burst causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle then supposedly swerved off the road and landed in a ditch killing the 46-year-old officer instantly. The injured officer, 51, was taken to a nearby hospital.
Provincial Provincial Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba visited the scene and has on behalf of the provincial Police management and members conveyed his condolences to the family, relatives, friends and colleagues. He also wished the injured member a speedy recovery.
The name of the deceased wil be made known as soon as his next of kin has been notified.
