Westenburg learners share their views on the importance of donating blood
Learners from Hoërskool Westenburg Secondary did their bit to give back to the community by donating blood during the blood drive initiated by the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) on Friday, 9 February.
Brother and sister Aldrich and Zhanrde Schroeder are both regular blood donators said they always make it a point to make sure that they attend every blood drive that is held close to their home. “We were raised in a home where we were and still get taught to help those in need , either it be with money or emotionally. So this is our way of doing our bit to give back to the community and also help save lifes,” said Aldrich who is donating for the 11 times now and his sister Zhandre for the 5th time.
POLOKWANE – A multitude of learners took part in the blood drive, some even donating for the first time. Review spoke to some of these learners who donated blood, some first time blood donors and others whom are regular blood donators to find out why they think it is important to donate blood.
This is what they had to say:
Kamogelo Letsoalo (gr 12) said, “Last year I was not very much involved in blood donations and this year I just wanted to make an effort to play my part in helping to save lifes. There are people who depend on blood donations such are those who become involved in critical life threatening accidents and donating blood will go a long way to save 2/3 life, one person donating blood saves three lifes,” she said.Kelathloko Mokomane also in Gr 12 shared similar sentiments as Kamogelo Letsoalo and said that blood donations are vital and encouraged his peers to do the same.Crystal More said that at first she was nervous to donate as she is terrified of needles. “The nurse explained to me the importance of donating blood and also talked to me and calmed me down as I really do not like needles and at the end I was able to donate blood easily and I feel great and proud knowing that I am doing my bit to help save a life,” she said.
