48 Enterprise staff members rushed to hospital following Ammonia gas leak

Tiger Brands confirmed that 48 staff members were sent for observation and minor treatment at nearby hospitals after an ammonia leak from its large refrigeration unit at its Enterprise factory in Polokwane.

POLOKWANE – “The incident occurred during the start-up operations of the factory after a 17- hour municipal electrical interruption on yesterday evening. Full investigations into the cause of the leak is underway,” Nevashnee Naicker, Corporate Communications Director, said.

“Large refrigeration units require registered installation, which include that standard emergency procedures are developed and well communicated to staff in order to appropriately manage any incident. Consequently, the standard emergency protocol was followed, which includes the evacuation of staff and treatment/observation for staff who may have been exposed to the gas,” she said.

The company confirmed that all staff are accounted for and have been released from hospital after observation and receiving minor treatment for those who may have been exposed to the gas.
