‘Buckling up is the simplest way to save a life’
Wearing a seatbelt is often something that is neglected by motorists and the sad truth is that wearing one could mean the difference between life and death, when involved in a collision.
According to the National Road Traffic Act, 1996 “No person shall operate a motor vehicle on a public road unless the seatbelts fitted to such motor vehicle are in good working order. Seatbelts fitted to a motor vehicle may only be removed for repair or replacement purposes and such motor vehicle may not be used on a public road while such seatbelts are being repaired or replaced.” (For the full act visit https://www.who.int/violence_injury_prevention/road_safety_status/2009/laws/seat_belt_south_africa.pdf)
Arrive Alive is of the same opinion and states that “Buckling up is the simplest way to save your child’s life and to not insist on the wearing of a seatbelt is “a form of neglect.”
