Police in Kgapane are investigating cases of attempted murder, malicious damage to property and contravention of the explosives Act after five armed suspects allegedly broke into a bank at Modjadji Plaza early yesterday (Wednesday) morning.
Provincial Police Corporate Communications Head Motlafela Mojapelo indicated that a security guard on duty witnessed five suspects getting out of a white vehicle in front of the plaza at about 02:30.
The suspects armed with rifles allegedly broke the gate to the plaza and proceeded to the Nedbank where they smashed the window to gain access to the bank, according to Mojapelo. He added that the security officer heard an explosion from inside the bank before the suspect came out.
A Police vehicle transporting a rape victim and her mother drove by the scene and the culprits then allegedly opened fire on the vehicle. The driver lost control and the vehicle ended up in a ditch next to the road, Mojapelo cited.
It is not clear if any cash was stolen from the bank. The officer and the mother sustained light injuries due to the crash.
No arrests were made yet. Investigations continue.
