Security officer shot and killed in Jane Furse, police search for 20 armed suspects

Police say the security guard was killed at Jane Furse Plaza in the early hours of this morning.

POLOKWANE – According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, a security officer, who was on duty at the mall, was approached by two men who pointed him with firearms.

“He then attempted to flee while using his hand radio to alert his colleagues, but they were all surprised by a group of twenty armed suspects, who ordered them to lie down,” Mojapelo explained.

The suspects broke into the Standard Bank through the roof and others attempted to break the security door leading to the ATMs using explosives, but the devises failed to detonate.

“The deceased, Moses Kokhutsa (54) was patrolling in a security motor vehicle and responded to a radio call when he was shot dead,” Mojapelo said.

The police responded and the suspects fled from the scene.

Members of the Bomb Disposal Unit were also summoned to the scene and many empty cartridges of R5 and AK47 rifles were found.

“It is not clear at this stage if any money was taken but police investigations continue,” Mojapelo added.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has ordered members of the Trio Crimes Task Team to track down the suspects until all of them are put behind bars.
