Police rescue Mahwelereng businessman after hostage situation

Two suspects are still on the run following an incident where a 24-year-old Mahwelereng businessman was carjacked, kidnapping and held hostage on Saturday afternoon (27 January 2018).

LIMPOPO – The incident in question occurred along the N11 Mokopane and Steiloop road at around 17:30.

Police Spokesperson, Captain Mamphaswa Seabi, reported: “According to the information received the victim, Mr Vahora Ashif, was driving out of his business premises at Ham outside Mokopane, when he was stopped by two men who requested a lift. One of the men immediately produced a firearm, held him at gunpoint and both suspects got into the vehicle and drove towards the direction of Mahwelereng.”

During the trip the suspects allegedly contacted the family of the victim and demanded a ransom amount of R80 000 or threatened they would kill him, added Seabi.

Police were notified and negotiators from the provincial hostage and suicide unit led the investigation which led to the victim being rescued at Mosesetjane village with out the ransom money being paid. Further investigation  led to the vehicle being recovered at Sansloot village.

No arrests have been made as yet and police urge anyone with information which can assist the police investigation to contact their nearest police station, concluded Seabi.
