Department investigates racism claims at doctor’s practice

MEC for the Department of Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, visited a medical practice in Mokopane following claims of racial segregation and racism as well as the dispensing of expired medicine.

POLOKWANE – Department of Health Spokesperson, Derick Kganyago, confirmed the visit and said the doctor in question admitted to wrongdoings and appealed for assistance from the MEC to correct things at the practice.

“Among others, we will send one of the department’s pharmacists to address issues of good pharmacy practice, medicine storage, dispensing and disposing of expired medicine,” Kganyago said.
He added the doctor agreed to pay for his staff to be trained as pharmacy assistants. “The department will continue to monitor the practice to ensure it complies with the constitution and all our acts, policies and regulations. The doctor apologised for the harm this might have caused,” Kganyago said.

South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) investigations continue.
