Tumi Mokwena, defence attorney for double murder accused Rameez Patel, withdrew from the trial proceedings in the Limpopo High Court on Monday.
Patel’s alleged failure to pay for Mokwena’s services is among the reasons for his withdrawal. A second reason proffered involves a statement made by Patel’s brother, Razeen.
Razeen recently returned from London having been recalled to testify on a certain aspect of the trial. Mokwena indicated that Razeen’s new statement implicated him in alleged malpractice during court proceedings and he therefore opted to withdraw from the case. Floyd Legodi will take over Patel’s defence as of 6 February.
Patel is standing trial for the alleged killing of his wife Fatima in April 2015. Judgement is also expected in his bail application on 2 February in connection with the alleged murder of his mother Mahjebeen in September last year.
