Mitchell House maths whizz visits Maties

Ismail Gani, a Gr 9 learner from Mitchell House, made his parents, school and the province proud when he attended a maths camp the first week in December.

POLOWANE – The maths camp was hosted at the Stellenbosch University (Maties) and Ismail was one of the about 50 learners from across South Africa who were invited to attend.

At these maths camps the learners gain experience and become more prepared for the various mathematics olympiads throughout the year and their school careers.

The camp forms part of a series of camps organised by the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF). Through these camps, the SAMF aims to select teams which will represent South Africa at the annual International Mathematical Olympiad and Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad.

Ismail’s proud mom, Kaamila, told Review she is extremely proud of her son as well as Mitchell House for equipping him with the skills and knowledge to shine.

“It’s very prestigious to be invited to these maths camps.  Ismail wouldn’t have been able to achieve this if it wasn’t for their guidance and exceptional teaching skills,” she said.

Mitchell House Headmaster, Andrew Cook, said Ismail is the eldest son of a remarkably gifted family. “Two of his siblings have published books and the whole family went to Yale University in America to participate in the finals of the Scholars’ Cup, a competition they entered in June last year. Both Ismail and his brother, Faizaan, are especially gifted at mathematics and it is no surprise they have been involved with Stellenbosch University as part of a gifted programme. We salute Ismail’s parents for being the kind of involved and expert parents they are and for supporting what we do by way of academic extension at Mitchell House,” Andrew said.

Ismail added he appreciates Mitchell House for steering him in a good direction. “I wouldn’t have been able to do any of these things without the guidance of my parents and Mitchell House. I feel honoured to be part of a great learning experience,” he said.
