One small bean turned Bayhound Coffee to a dream come true

Susan le Roux, along with her husband Pieter, opened The Coffee Kennel in May 2017.

POLOKWANE – For those that drink coffee, appreciating a good cup of coffee is like finding Nirvana.

Local resident Susan le Roux and her husband, Pieter, are two coffee-lovers who decided Polokwane needed a fresh coffee kick.

“We both love coffee and frequented coffee shops where ever we went. When we moved to Polokwane, we struggled to find a place that sold the coffee we wanted. More so, we realised no one here roasted their own coffee,” says Susan as she roasts a fresh batch of beans.

“In 2012 some of our friends started to develop a roaster, and this is where our love for coffee took a turn.”

The couple decided to open The Coffee Kennel in May 2017 when they brewed their first cup as proud owners of the smallest roast coffee house in the country, according to Susan.

“We get our beans from all over the word and use importers that do very good research before getting beans. We therefore have specialty coffee.”

They have been roasting coffee since 2015 and began selling roasted coffee beans under the name ‘Bayhound Coffee Works’.

They frequented Mina’s Market selling their beans.

“At first, we were just roasting, now we are serving as well. We also collaborated with The Baking Co. who are baking cupcakes and macaroons for us. We also have to food-options on our menu. We are getting requests to sell coffee and events and will be at the Berry Festival in Magoebaskloof.”
