4 things to consider before getting a tattoo

Local tattoo artist Sean Stegman shares his tips on the most important things one should consider before getting a tattoo

POLOKWANE – Tattoos have a different meaning for most people, however, regardless of one’s stance regarding this controversial topic, it is a form of art which has long been celebrated by some and cursed by others.

However, there are a few things you need to bare in mind before taking the plunge…

Don’t get one on impulse

According to local tattoo artist Sean Stegman one should always go with a plan, and not spontaneously after a night on the town. “First go and do research and make one hundred percent sure the piece is exactly what you want, because you will have it forever.”

Know your pain threshhold

“You’ll hear different things about how much the needle will hurt. They pain does vary based on where you’re getting the tattoo and how colorful it is, but the short-term discomfort will likely be worth the joy of an ink job well done,” he adds.

Don’t shop for a bargain

He explains that one should also not throw caution to the wind when it comes to choosing an artist. “Ask to view their previous work and talk to clients who have already had work done at that particular artist. It takes experience, skill and talent to pull difficult pieces off with the correct shading and lines.”

Aftercare is most essential

Keep your tattoo moisturized and use a higher SPF when out in the sun in order to keep your tattoo fresh, he concludes.
