Five suspected poachers nabbed at roadblock outside Phalaborwa

Five suspected illegal hunters arrested on Saturday along the R40 road between Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa, will appear before the Hoedspruit Magistrates Court soon, says the police.

 

LIMPOPO – The police, following up on a tip-off received about suspects en route to commit illegal hunting, nabbed the said suspects, aged between 30 and 36, at around 23:00 during a tactical led joint operation conducted at Samey garage Mica between Hoedspruit R40 and Phalaborwa.

The tactical led-joint operation was composed of various police units including Provincial Tracking Team, Crime Intelligence, Tactical Response Team and the Rhino 8 team from Phalaborwa and was condcuted in the form of a road block and stop and search.

The suspects were pulled off the road and the following was recovered during the search:

• Golden Ford Figo with Mpumalanga registration number.
• 375 hunting rifle with serial numbers filled off
• Ammunition
• 9mm Norinco pistol with serial numbers filled off.

The arrested suspects face charges of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition and conspiracy to commit illegal hunting of protected species and are still being profiled with the possibility of linking them with similar charges and other crimes.
