Tower batteries worth R160 000 recovered after police chase in Hlanganani

A tip-off from local residents have resulted in the arrest of a 26-year-old suspect for the possession of suspected stolen property and recovery of sixteen batteries worth over R160 000, confirmed the police on Tuesday 16 January 2018.

LIMPOPO – Lt Col Robert Netshiunda reported: “Police, acting on a tip-off about a theft taking place at the Vodacom Masakona Tower, arrived on the scene to find a white bakkie branded with the name of a protection and armed response company nearby. The officers ordered the driver of the said vehicle to stop, whereby the driver defied the orders and sped off. A chase ensued until the officers managed to corner the vehicle at the Hlanganani RDP section and arrest the suspect.”

Upon searching the vehicle the members found seven batteries stashed in the bakkie. Preliminary investigations led the police back to the tower where they found nine more batteries hidden adjacent to the scene, he added.

The suspect will appear before the Tiyani Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property, Netshiunda concluded.
