Illegal miner killed during rock fall

The 44-year-old man was killed while illegally mining chrome near Burgersfort

LIMPOPO –  According to a statement issued by Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo , the incident occurred at at Mandagshoek on Wednesday, 10 January 2018 at around 10:00.

“The police were informed of the incident and visited the scene and EMS was summoned, whereby the deceased, identified as Diphasong Commence Lerutla, was declared dead on the scene.

The Driekop Police have opened an inquest docket and locals are once again warned to halt this dangerous activity.

“We call on all members of the community to halt this tendency of engaging in illegal mining as this has, in addition of them contravening the laws governing the Mineral Recourses, a potential of claiming lives due to the hazards associated with unprotected digging of the ground.”

Since the activities of illegal mining started mushrooming along the R37 road between Lebowakgomo and Burgersfort, scores of people have already been arrested and huge trucks as well as mining machinery confiscated. Read more: Illegal miners out on bail and set to reappear in October
