The 2018 minimum wages for domestic workers

The department of Labour has increased the minimum wage payable to domestic workers effective from 1 January 2018 to 30 November 2018

POLOKWANE – When it comes to looking after the people who is trusted with those everyday things like cleaning and in some cases even cooking for families, it is required that people stay in touch with the set minimum wage that domestic workers need to be paid.
The new rates from 1 January 2018 to 30 November 2018 are:
1. Minimum wages for domestic workers who work more than 27 ordinary hours a week are:
• R11,89 per hour.
• R534,91 per week.
• R2317,75 per month.
2. Minimum wages for domestic workers who work less than 27 ordinary hours a week are:
• R14,03 per hour.
• R378,83 per week.
• R1641,48 per month.
The rates are indicative for employees working a maximum of 45 hours a week.
Review spoke to local domestic workers to find out if they feel that the money is enough and how the change in the rate have impacted them
“I have been blessed with the increase as it helps me buy extra food items like mealie meal that helps me provide food for my family for a few days more,” Lillian Mubana told Review.
Another domestic worker Johanna Malebatse told Review that the minimum wage does not really effect her as she has a contract with her employer at a fixed rate that is more than the minimum rate and also gets an annual increase and therefor she does not have complaints.
