Electronic devices an advantage for schools and learners

Year upon year public schools in South Africa experience services delivery calamities.

There are countless ways to avoid such calamities from happening, one solution being the introduction and implementation of modern technology into classrooms.

Several public schools across the country have already implemented the use of modern technology such as computers, cell phones, apps, websites, educational video games and social media among others as educational tools.

Introducing such technologies into classrooms certainly has its benefits. It can prepare children to acquire the necessary skills to be ready for the workplace once they complete school. It can also limit the lack of resources available to learners caused by the non-delivery of textbooks.

Schools already using the above-mentioned technologies prove there is an increase in academic performance while it also bolsters the standard of school education. This has been proven in a study by Bitter and Legacy.

This research also proved an important factor which shows learners have higher comprehension scores after reading a text on an electronic device instead of reading it from print. This study concluded learners are more likely to retain information and will be more engaged through visuals and animations using technology.

The use of electronic devices by learners in classrooms is becoming the norm in South Africa, avoiding several complications related to the non-delivery of textbooks.

South Africa can provide high-class education but it needs to embrace the use of modern devices inside and outside the classroom to reach its potential. Technology is not going to fix everything and it comes with its own challenges, but South Africa is not in a position not to try.

Devices such as tablets or laptops are devices which can be used by learners in the classroom.

Unlike several textbooks which require a lot of space and are heavy to carry, tablets can store all the information contained in these textbooks in a small and compact device which is easier for learners to carry around.

Strict supervision should be applied regarding the use of these tablets, however, to ensure the children do not use them for other activities such as games during school time. It also requires extra care on thepart of the learner and the parents as these devices ar much more sensitive than textbooks and can easily be damaged or broken if handled roughly.
