Limpopo Police condemn stoning and burning of taxis in Lebowakgomo

It is alleged the incident occurred after taxi operators forced a resident to use their service instead of hiking nearby

LIMPOPO – The Provincial Commissioner LT. General Nneke Ledwaba has condemned acts of mob attacks and vigilantism which erupted in Ga-Mphahlele area outside Lebowakgomo in which four taxis were stoned and set alight.

The incident, which occurred yesterday afternoon (Tuesday 2 January 2018) saw residents in the area allegedly stone and set alight four taxis at Maijane village. This happened after taxi operators forced a resident to use their service instead of hiking near Seleteng taxi rank, explains Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

“Police were notified, officers reacted swiftly and the situation was brought under control. Cases of malicious damage to property and assault were opened.”

No arrests have been made as yet but investigations into the identification of those involved still continue, confrims Ngoepe.

“Members of the Community must at all times resort to the legal processes in case of any situation or conflict rather than engaging in violent acts which is totally uncalled for. All perpetrators involved in this incident will be dealt with mercilessly and without compromise, concluded General Ledwaba.
