The Coyote: bringing the sounds of the cha-cha to Polokwane

Feeding the soul comes in different forms and for Etu Javier Lopez, otherwise known as the Coyote, music is the answer to all troubled souls and wounded hearts.

POLOKWANE – He is originally from Bolivia, South America and has been performing since the age of 22.

He can play various instruments including the flute, charango guitar, cha-cha and drums. The cha-cha is an interesting and traditional Indian instrument made out of hundreds of bear nails strung together, it is then shaken and jingles together in order to keep the rhythm.

Both his parents, who are also musicians, began teaching him the ways of traditional Indian music at the age of 12 and he has since toured all over the world including Egypt, Argentina, Israel and Panama to do shows, perform at festivals and promote his music.

“I have been to various countries all over the world but even though I enjoyed it, I always came back to South Africa. I feel connected with this country and it means a lot to me which is why I decided to make it my home base. Music is a big family tradition and I definitely aim to teach my own children to perform seeing as they are already interested in music. We all have a spiritual connection to music, it is in our blood flowing through our veins.”

Music is his full-time job and all of his seven albums were recorded in South America by Mana Records. He explains that he gets most of his inspiration from nature and he always goes to the mountains to clear his head and get ideas for his music.

He usually performs at festivals, weddings and flea markets and will be performing at the Mall of the North until 24 December where all of his albums will be available.

“If there is one thing I truly love about South Africa it is the food, my favourite would have to be potjiekos. It is the most delicious dish and I would have it every day if I could.”
