Increasing crime a worrying factor after Morapalala Clinic staff robbed at gun point

Health personnel at Morapalala Clinic in Bolobedu outside Tzaneen, are living in fear of being attacked after a group of men entered the premises and robbed a nurse of her vehicle and a computer.

LIMPOPO –  They also robbed the security guard of his firearm, in the incident which happened last Wednesday evening.

Services at the clinic were brought to an abrupt halt on Thursday as most of the nurses and other officials working at the clinic were still in shock. It is alleged the men arrived at the clinic at 23:30 and pretended as if they brought a seriously ill patient.

When security officers opened the gates, the men pointed guns at them, handcuffed and led them to the nurses’ home, instructing them to call the nurses to open the doors. The security guards were locked inside the toilets of the home and the nurse ordered to hand over the car keys and two cellphones.

On Friday, the community at Morapalala village met to discuss strategies on how they can help one another to fight the increasing rate of crime in the area.

During the meeting, the community took a decision to work together to ensure that such criminal activities do not happen again.

Community concerns came after a local Somalian shop was robbed three weeks ago by unknown suspects.

Earlier last week, electricity cables were stolen at some eight households by unknown suspects while others who wore balaclavas knock at some houses at night with an intention to scout who is at home and who is not so they can rob them.

The Provincial Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, confirmed the incident and said police are still searching for the suspects.

Ngoepe appealed to villagers who might have information regarding the incidents to contact the nearest police with information.

Approached for comment, provincial Health Spokesperson, Thabiso Tefo, said they were aware of the situation and the department in the Mopani district will intervene and ensure that the issue of beefing up security at the clinic is looked into.

He further said a similar incident occured at Jamela Clinic about 20 kilometres away from Morapalala Clinic.

“We are calling on communities where the criminals are situated to join hands in ensuring that criminals do not disturb service delivery in their facilities,” he said.
