Lim’s target is still an 80% pass rate – Education MEC

The provincial government and the Department of Education still have the hope of producing better matric results than the previous years.

LIMPOPO – Earlier before the matric learners could sit for the final examination, the province had promised to achieve an 80% matric pass rate
More than 130 000 learners wrote the exams and the last exam paper was written a fortnight ago.
MEC for Education, Ishmael Kgetjepe, said officials from his department visited several schools that did not perform well last year before they could sit for this year’s final examination.
“Through the great work done by the department towards the examination, we have no doubt we will reach our target as promised,” said Kgetjepe.
The provincial class of 2016 had a pass rate of 62,5%, which saw the province placed in eighth position nationally.
Kgetjepe said they were fully prepared as a province and they believe their aim to produce better results will come true.
“Our visits to our schools served as a way to motivate and encourage our learners that despite last year’s poor results, they can still do better and lift our province to the first position nationally,” he said.
Kgetjepe added “The province had prepared from day one to ensure that its matriculants were ready at the end of the year.”
He further said: “As a province, we are happy that this year’s exams went smoothly and that learners complied with exam rules”.
Provincial Government Spokesperson, Phuti Seloba, said their target as a province still remains 80% and there is no reason to change that. “We are still looking forward to achieving the target and we are happy that all went well throughout the exams period,” said Seloba.
