Camera, newsroom guru Frank Phoshoko dies

Well known SABC cameraman Frank Phoshoko (61) died on Tuesday morning after being hospitalised since November following a freak accident in which he alleged sustained serious head injuries.
Described as a brother, colleague and fellow cameraman Llewelyn Carstens said Phoshoko was not a talkative person but someone great at listening and understanding. “He was not only a colleague and good friend but a pillar of strength who was able to pull a rabbit from the hat in any situation,” Carstens, who knew Phoshoko since 1995, said.
SABC journalist and colleague of 11 years, Mike Maringa described Phoshoko as caring, loving and a proud family man. “He started at SABC in 1983 and loved his job dearly. He was the newsroom guru who always went the extra mile to obtain quality footage. The office will never be the same without him,” Maringa said.
He explained that Phoshoko fell during a shoot outside Burgersfort on 13 November when he bumped his head. “He was unconscious immediately, never regained consciousness and was treated in the Mediclinic Limpopo’s Intensive Care Unit ever since,” Maringa said.
A memorial service will be held at SABC today (Thursday) at 11:00 followed by his funeral in the city on Sunday. He leaves behind his wife, Mapula and three children.
