Suspect hands himself over after armed robbery chaos

Two suspects were stopped in their tracks soon after committing several business robberies in and around the Tzaneen and Giyani areas on Monday morning.

LIMPOPO – One of the targets was a local shop in Mokwakwaila village outside Tzaneen where they allegedly stopped and shot the shop owner in the head before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. The victim was taken to a hospital with head injuries and the police were informed whereby they launched a search for the suspects, Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo says.

“Unaware that the police were following them, the suspects, travelling in the same vehicle, committed yet other business robbery at the villages of Dzumeri and Abel in Giyani Cluster. This time the police caught up with them and a car chase ensued which resulted in the suspects loosing control of their vehicle, swerving off the road into the bushes and abandoning their vehicle. One of the suspects was apparently injured during the accident and while fleeing the scene, some gun shots were heard and the injured suspect was allegedly shot.”

The injured suspect survived the shooting and is under police guard in hospital. The police however are still investigating the information that the injured suspect was allegedly shot by his partner in crime; in an apparent attempt to destroy the evidence, says Mojapelo.

The second suspect was apprehended after he handed himself over to the police in Giyani, confirms Mojapelo.

Both suspects, aged 25 and 42-years-old, will soon appear before the Giyani and Tzaneen magistrate’s courts respectively on charges of business robbery and attempted murder.
