Lunchtime traffic came to a standstill in Polokwane’s city centre on Tuesday when shots rang out after an argument left a taxi driver dead.
Police are investigating a case of murder after a 23-year-old taxi driver was shot and killed in Church Street Tuesday afternoon.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe indicated that the incident happened at around 14:15 on the corner of Church and Bodenstein streets after an alleged argument between the deceased who has not been identified yet and an armed suspect.
It is alleged that an argument between the occupants of a Volkswagen Golf and the taxi driver erupted resulting in shots being fired from the vehicle. The taxi driver was fatally wounded and died on the scene, according to Ngoepe.
He added that a community member who was at the hitch-hiking spot apparently threw a brick at the vehicle and the four occupants emerged from the vehicle and fled on foot.
The motive behind the killing is not clear yet but investigations will tell as it unfold, according to Ngoepe. Anyone with information can contact the investigation officer Richard Boshomane on 079 894 5501 or the crime stop number 08600 10111 or report to the nearest Police station.
