Provincial Chairperson of South African Women in Construction (Sawic), Mapula Maupye has urged women doing business in construction to register with the Contractor Development Board (CIDB) and upgrade their grading in order to be recognised by Government.
Speaking at the organisation’s 20th anniversary celebrations recently held in Polokwane, Maupye said some of the women in construction are on the lower grading of CIDB which is a disadvantage.
“We want them to upgrade and get more tenders from Government because when they are on a lower grading their chances are limited and compromised.”
Mikateko Nwelwamondo, a CIDB representative reportedly said the board was currently holding road shows in different parts of the province to workshop contractors about the new regulations which will be implemented in twenty-four to thirty-six months and compliance to which is essential for contractors to be awarded tenders.
CIDB is a national body established by an Act 38 of 2000 to oversee the sustainability and growth of construction enterprises across the country.
The event was hosted by the National Home Builders Registration Council, a regulatory body of the home building industry.
